Costa Rica or "rich coast" in English; lives up to its name in many ways. Costa Rica has enjoyed a stable democracy for more than 100 years and has a reputation for peace. Costa Rica is a neutral country and has not had an army since 1949. Location wise bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east; it is a fairly small country formed by mountainous ranges with dry, cloud and rain forests.
Costa Rica has 96% literacy and high percentage of the population speaks English.
The Costa Rica people known as "ticos" have many reasons to be proud of this small country (20,000 sq miles) which hosts around 5 million inhabitants. Even though Costa Rica's territory represents only 0.03% of the world's landmass, this little piece of heaven on earth is home to 5% of the flora and fauna on the planet; amazing biodiversity. For this reason, Costa Rica is noted for being simply a naturist wonderland. 25% of Costa Rican territory is under protection, such as National Parks, Private Reserves and National Wildlife Refuges being these the largest percentage of protected areas in the world.
